Re: Laptop for Aerospace Engineering student
Thanks for all of the replies. I sure appreciate all the help. Update: My son downloaded Solidworks last night and installed it on the Surface Pro. I am told that he was able to successfully launch Solidworks and model up a simple part. No apparent problems for now. His Surface Pro is running Win10 ...

Re: Laptop for Aerospace Engineering student
Matt, Thank you for the Dell Outlet link, but unfortunately that link does not work. Could you provide some of the specs you searched for so I can search over at Dell? Also good idea about looking over at EAA. MJuric, Thanks for your ideas on what the low end looks like and what the high end looks l...

Laptop for Aerospace Engineering student
Any recommendations on a laptop for an Aerospace Engineering student for his junior year? He is transferring into a UC school after doing his lower division class work at a community college. They are going to be using Solidworks, MatLab, and Abaqus (FEA analysis). He currently has a 3 year old MIcr...

Re: Best way to change material in SW CAM?
Tim, Evidently both the Student Edition and the Student Premium versions of 2020 Solidworks come with Solidworks CAM Professional. So I do have CAM configurations. That is an elegant and simple solution for me. Not sure what your experience is or where you're at in this process but if you're trying ...

Re: Drilling in SW CAM Turning
Tim, Thank you again for your help. It is indeed strange behavior. While the ability to control the depth of the drill by either Z-planes or picking ID geometry is very useful, this appears to affect the depth of the drill tip. What would be useful is for the drill to go deep enough that the drill f...

Re: Drilling in SW CAM Turning
Hello Tim, I was able to play some more with the part in SW CAM using your video. I tried editing the ID Feature1 [Drill] by deleting all of the Selected Features and picking the same line that you did at 3:33 in the video. Then I noticed that a bunch of stuff in that Edit Turn Feature screen were g...

Re: Best way to change material in SW CAM?
Have you gone over material groups in the Tech Database in your class? If so you can do what you want to do really easily in a single part. That is a big part of my problem. My school's CNC Lab teaches classes in Solidworks and Mastercam, but not Solidworks CAM. So I have been completely on my own ...

Re: Best way to change material in SW CAM?
Thanks for the different options and the pros/cons. I did the initial part programming in aluminum for several reasons. 1) I am a beginner programmer in SW CAM 2) aluminum is less expensive than 4140 3) tool path mistakes in aluminum are easier on the Haas SL-20T than mistakes in 4140 Even though th...

Best way to change material in SW CAM?
I have been running several projects in aluminum to proof out my CAM generated gcode, but the final product is going to be made of 4140 Annealed or 4140 Prehard. What Is the best way to change materials like this? One option is to save the SW file as a copy and then modify the speeds and feeds as ne...

Re: Drilling in SW CAM Turning
Wow Tim, that is outstanding! I think that will solve the present problem quite nicely.
I’m going to have to watch that video several times to fully digest all of the other tidbits that you dropped.
Thanks again.

Re: Drilling in SW CAM Turning
Thanks for the reply. These features were not created as holes, but rather were created with a revolve. So the CAM Feature Tree shows "ID Feature1 [Drill]" for everything inside including the 1.25" bore and the 1/2" bottom hole . When I click on Parameters I get a "ID Profil...

Drilling in SW CAM Turning
I have a turned part that has a 1.25" diameter bore and then a 1/2" hole that is at the bottom of the bore and goes the rest of the way through the part. Initially I used a 15/32" drill to go all the way through the part and then used a small boring bar to chew out the large bore and ...
